 What is a surge?

  • An extremely brief spike of current and voltage which can damage distribution equipment such as motors and sensitive electronics.

What causes surges?

  • Externally generated surges can come from utilities, source switching (smart grid, capacitor banks), lightning and other power disturbances from the outdoor environment.
  • Internally generated surges can result from any reactive loads that switch on and off.  Examples are compressors, ac handlers, large pumps, motors and more.

What kind of damage is caused by a surge?

  • Disruption: Cost of downtime while equipment is reset, bad data transfer which can disrupt the operation
  • Degradation: Surges slowly cause damage to electrical components.  This is referred to as electronic rust and it causes a shortened lifespan of the equipment.
  • Destruction: Large surges from outside the facility can burn up sensitive microprocessors and motors.  In extreme cases, this can cause the equipment to smoke or catch fire.

How can I tell if my equipment has surge damage?

  • Frequent computer lock-ups
  • Equipment shut-downs
  • Flickering lights
  • Blown ballasts
  • Shortened lifespan

Why should I invest in surge protective devices?

  • SPDs are a cost effective solution that are far less expensive than the cost replacement equipment and labor involved in replacing damaged equipment
